Surat Civic Teams Remove 300kg of Weekend Litter from Dumas Sea Face
In a significant cleanup operation, health and sanitation teams from the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), supported by dedicated NGO volunteers, successfully collected approximately 300 kilograms of litter from the Dumas Sea Face on Sunday evening. This swift action followed a massive influx of visitors over the weekend, which left the popular beachfront strewn with waste.
Weekend Crowds Overwhelm Beachfront Infrastructure
Civic officials reported that the litter accumulated during the two-day weekend period, as thousands of visitors flocked to the newly developed section of the beachfront. Estimates indicate that more than 30,000 people visited the Sea Face over the weekend, drawn by its reputation as a long-standing picnic spot and the allure of the recently opened area. While many visitors responsibly used the available dustbins after enjoying meals on the lawn, the sheer volume of picnickers overwhelmed the existing infrastructure.
As a result, plastic bags, disposable cups, pouches, and plates were scattered across numerous locations, creating an unsightly and unhygienic environment. The sanitation teams moved quickly to address the issue, clearing the majority of the litter within hours after the crowds dispersed on Sunday.
Awareness Campaigns and Swift Cleanup Efforts
To promote cleanliness and discourage littering, the SMC deployed 15 supervisors and approximately 80 volunteers from prominent NGOs, including the Shantadevi Charitable Trust, Chiranjivi Foundation, and Surbin Trust. These volunteers formed organized groups to engage with visitors, urging them not to litter and using loudspeakers to broadcast awareness messages about environmental responsibility.
Despite these proactive efforts, litter was still left in open areas at several spots along the Sea Face. An SMC official explained, "Despite these awareness efforts, litter was left in the open at several places. Our teams carried out a swift clean-up and most of the waste was removed on Sunday night, while the rest of the cleaning was completed on Monday morning." This coordinated response ensured that the beachfront was restored to a clean state promptly, minimizing the environmental impact.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by urban areas in managing waste during peak tourist seasons and underscores the importance of both public awareness and robust civic action in maintaining public spaces. The SMC's rapid cleanup demonstrates a commitment to sanitation and community health, setting a precedent for future handling of similar situations.
