Punjab Health Minister Launches TB Elimination Campaign on World TB Day
In a significant move to combat tuberculosis, Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh inaugurated the state-level TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan on Tuesday at the Padma Shri Dr Khushdeva Singh Chest Diseases and TB Hospital in Patiala. The event, timed to coincide with World TB Day, marks a renewed push to address one of Punjab's most persistent public health challenges.
Mobile Testing Van Flagged Off for Immediate Diagnosis
As part of the launch, Dr Balbir Singh flagged off a mobile CB-NAAT van, a cutting-edge initiative designed to facilitate on-the-spot testing for suspected TB patients. This mobile unit aims to ensure immediate diagnosis and prompt initiation of treatment, reducing delays that often exacerbate the disease's spread and severity.
The minister emphasized that tuberculosis remains a serious concern in Punjab, with approximately 60,000 cases reported annually. However, he noted that many cases still go undetected, underscoring the need for enhanced screening and community awareness.
Targeted Screening and Community Involvement
Dr Balbir Singh outlined the campaign's strategy, which includes special screening programs targeting high-risk populations such as the elderly, slum residents, and other vulnerable groups. He urged citizens to actively participate by coming forward as Ni-kshay Mitras (TB friends), a role aimed at supporting elimination efforts and combating the stigma associated with the disease.
"We must work together to remove the stigma and ensure that every case is detected and treated promptly," the minister stated, highlighting the importance of community engagement in achieving a TB-free Punjab.
Government's Broader Health Initiatives
During his address, Dr Balbir Singh also detailed the Punjab government's broader health priorities under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's leadership. He mentioned several key initiatives, including:
- Providing nutritious food to 40 lakh families across the state.
- Offering free treatment up to Rs 10 lakh to 65 lakh families through various health schemes.
- Establishing new medical colleges to enhance healthcare infrastructure.
- Distributing free medicines through Aam Aadmi Clinics, making government hospitals more accessible and beneficial for the public.
The minister expressed appreciation for the support of social organizations in making the TB elimination campaign successful, noting that collaborative efforts are essential for tackling public health issues effectively.

The event was attended by several key health officials, including:
- Dr R P S Sibia, Director Principal of Medical College.
- Dr Rajesh Bhaskar, State TB Officer.
- Dr Vishal Chopra, Deputy Medical Superintendent of TB Hospital.
