CM Naidu Orders Statewide Scrub Typhus Awareness After Vizianagaram Death
Naidu Directs Health Dept on Scrub Typhus After Death

In a decisive move, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has instructed the state's medical and health department to launch an extensive public awareness campaign focused on scrub typhus. This directive comes in the wake of a tragic incident where a woman from Vizianagaram district succumbed to the disease.

Chief Minister Reviews Situation, Issues Directives

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu held a review meeting with Health Secretary Saurabh Gaur on Tuesday to assess the situation. The CM expressed deep concern over the death of Chandaka Rajeswari due to scrub typhus. He emphasized the urgent need to prevent similar fatalities across Andhra Pradesh through a multi-pronged strategy.

Naidu explicitly directed officials to ensure timely diagnosis, raise public awareness, and facilitate prompt medical intervention. He stressed that the medical and health machinery must intensify its outreach, particularly in vulnerable rural regions, advising citizens to seek immediate medical help if symptoms appear.

Understanding Scrub Typhus: Causes and Symptoms

During the meeting, Health Secretary Saurabh Gaur provided crucial details about the disease. He informed the Chief Minister that Rajeswari contracted scrub typhus after being bitten by infected chigger mites. Her case was initially misdiagnosed as typhoid, but subsequent rapid testing confirmed scrub typhus.

Gaur clarified that the disease is caused by the Orientia tsutsugamushi bacterium and is not a communicable disease that spreads from person to person. The common symptoms, which often lead to confusion with other infections, include:

  • Fever and chills
  • Headache and muscle pain
  • Development of rashes

Early detection and appropriate antibiotic treatment are absolutely critical to prevent severe complications and potential death, officials underscored.

Strengthening Statewide Medical Preparedness

Beyond the awareness campaign, Chief Minister Naidu has ordered the health department to bolster preparedness at all government hospitals. The goal is to ensure that any suspected cases receive timely and accurate treatment without delay. This move aims to build a more responsive healthcare front line against scrub typhus and similar fevers of unknown origin.

The review meeting was also attended by the Chief Minister's Principal Secretary, Muddada Ravichandra, highlighting the administration's seriousness in addressing this public health concern. The state government's proactive stance seeks to curb the spread of misinformation and ensure that citizens are well-informed about the risks and necessary precautions associated with scrub typhus.
