Mysuru Health Authorities Launch Summer Disease Prevention Drive
With temperatures on the rise, district health authorities in Mysuru have initiated a special drive to educate the public and implement preventive measures against the spread of seasonal diseases this summer. This proactive campaign aims to curb the incidence of illnesses that typically surge during the hotter months.
Alert Issued to Health Committees
The district health authorities have sounded an alert to 1,355 health, sanitation, and nutrition committees established under the rural health mission. These committees are tasked with initiating immediate measures to control seasonal diseases, including influenza, chicken pox, and food and vector-borne diseases such as hepatitis A and typhoid.
Committee members are actively advising villagers to drink boiled water and maintain cleanliness in their surroundings to minimize health risks.
Structure and Responsibilities of Committees
These committees are headed by local gram panchayat staff, involving panchayat development officers, GP secretaries, PHC medical officers, and accredited social health activists. They operate across all 275 GP limits of the district.
Key responsibilities include:
- Regularly checking the quality of drinking water to prevent contamination.
- Cleaning borewells and water pipes, and ensuring overhead tanks are kept clean.
- Repairing damaged water supply lines and other lapses in the water distribution system.
Most diseases like typhoid, jaundice, and diarrhoea spread through contaminated water, often due to damaged infrastructure. The committees are therefore focused on maintaining a safe water supply.
Monitoring Food Stalls and Festivals
Directions have been given to panchayat staff to monitor roadside stalls selling cut fruits within their limits to prevent the spread of diseases. Additionally, large crowds during jathra and other festivals can lead to the spread of water-borne, food-borne, and vector-borne diseases. Committee members have been instructed to keep a constant vigil on such celebrations to ensure public health safety.
Healthcare Infrastructure and Supplies
Apart from these preventive measures, the district health authorities have reserved two beds in all PHCs and five beds in taluk health hospitals to deal with emergencies during the summer. They have also stocked sufficient Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) in all PHCs, sub-centres, and community hospitals across the district to combat dehydration, heat exhaustion, and waterborne illnesses.
Awareness and Mock Drills
District Health Officer Dr. PC Kumaraswamy emphasized that ASHA workers have been directed to conduct door-to-door awareness drives, educating the masses on preventive steps to avoid diseases during summer. Committee members are also tasked with conducting mock drills to sensitize villagers about taking preventive health measures, ensuring community-wide preparedness.
This comprehensive approach underscores the district's commitment to safeguarding public health against seasonal threats.
