Mandya District Launches Comprehensive Menstrual Health Initiative
In a significant move to mark International Women's Day, Mandya district in Karnataka is launching an extensive month-long awareness campaign focused on menstrual health, hygiene, and the promotion of menstrual cups. The campaign will run from March 8 to April 8, as announced by KR Nandini, the chief executive officer of the Mandya zilla panchayat.
Strategic Implementation Through Video Conference
Chairing a crucial video conference via the Karnataka State Wide Area Network (KSWAN), Nandini provided detailed instructions to taluk executive officers to ensure the campaign's effective implementation across all taluks. She emphasized the critical importance of educating women about personal hygiene, cleanliness, and comprehensive menstrual health management.
Targeted Awareness and Distribution Strategy
The campaign features a structured approach with specific target groups:
- Awareness Groups for Younger Women: Officials have been directed to form dedicated awareness groups for women aged 18 to 35 years. These groups will focus on promoting proper hygiene practices and menstrual health education.
- Menstrual Cup Distribution for Older Women: For women in the 35–45 age bracket, the campaign will include distribution of menstrual cups accompanied by expert medical guidance to ensure safe and proper usage.
Pilot Phase and Village Transformation Goals
Under the pilot phase of this initiative, 17 gram panchayats have been strategically selected across the district. Nandini has issued specific directives for menstrual cup distribution to key community workers and professionals, including:
- All ASHA and anganwadi workers
- Teachers and mid-day meal staff
- Health department personnel
- Members of various self-help groups
The ambitious objective of this initiative is to transform these selected villages into 'pad-free' gram panchayats by encouraging the widespread adoption of sustainable menstrual products, thereby reducing environmental impact while improving women's health.
Comprehensive Implementation Team Structure
The campaign will be executed through a dedicated multidisciplinary team comprising:
- Panchayat development officers
- Health staff and medical professionals
- ASHA and anganwadi workers
- Staff from the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM)
- Taluk panchayat officials
- Hostel staff members
- Other active women officials from various departments
Broader Health and Social Initiatives
Beyond menstrual health, the campaign will also raise awareness about NRLM's Food, Nutrition, Health and WASH (FNHW) initiatives. Additionally, the program will incorporate educational components aimed at preventing gender-based violence, creating a holistic approach to women's wellbeing and empowerment throughout Mandya district.
This comprehensive month-long campaign represents a significant step forward in addressing menstrual health challenges while promoting sustainable practices and women's empowerment at the grassroots level.
