Kerala Shigella Outbreak: 70 Cases in June, 5 Deaths

Kerala Health Minister K Muraleedharan has confirmed a significant outbreak of Shigella infections in the state, with 70 cases reported in June alone. Since January, the bacterial disease has claimed five lives across Kerala, raising concerns among health officials.

Current Situation

Speaking to the media, Muraleedharan stated that the outbreak has primarily affected certain districts, while three districts—Pathanamthitta, Palakkad, and Kasaragod—have reported no Shigella cases so far this year. The minister emphasized that the government is taking proactive measures to contain the spread.

Government Response

The health department has intensified surveillance and awareness campaigns in affected areas. Medical teams are conducting door-to-door checks, and testing facilities have been expanded. Muraleedharan urged the public to maintain hygiene and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.

Shigella infection causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, and can be severe in young children and the elderly. The state has recorded a total of 150 cases since January, with June seeing the highest monthly tally.

Health authorities are investigating the source of the outbreak, which is often linked to contaminated food or water. Officials advise boiling water, washing hands regularly, and avoiding street food.
