The Karnataka school education department has issued a directive banning obscene songs and vulgar performances during school events across all government, aided, and unaided schools. The directive, dated April 16, instructs deputy directors of administration to strictly enforce the ban and take disciplinary action against school managements found violating the rules.
Key Guidelines for Schools
Institutions have been asked to ensure that students wear modest attire while participating in any performance. Schools must avoid songs considered vulgar and instead choose music that is inspiring, value-based, and reflective of Indian culture. The department encourages the use of songs that promote positive messages, patriotism, and cultural heritage.
Responsibilities of Headmasters and Managements
The circular holds headmasters and school managements accountable for selecting appropriate songs and choreography during events. It emphasizes that schools are spaces for shaping children's values and character. Performances perceived as inappropriate could negatively impact students' mental well-being, discipline, and moral development.
Impact on Students — The circular states: "Performing such dances will have a bad impact on the mental health and moral values of children. This will create indiscipline and will harm the sanctity of education."
Background of the Directive
The move follows a representation from Karnataka Rakshina Vedike Swabhimani Bana (Bengaluru unit) earlier this year, which raised concerns about the nature of songs and dances being performed at some school events. The department responded promptly to address these concerns and safeguard the educational environment.
