Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao announced that teleradiology services will be launched soon in the state. Speaking to reporters on Monday, he explained that X-ray and scan reports can be sent through a tele-system, allowing radiologists to review them and provide their opinions remotely.
This initiative aims to improve access to radiology expertise, especially in rural and underserved areas where specialist radiologists are scarce. The system will enable faster diagnosis and treatment, reducing the need for patients to travel to major hospitals.
Rao emphasized that the technology is ready and implementation will begin shortly. He added that the government is working on necessary infrastructure and training for healthcare staff to ensure a smooth rollout.
Benefits of Teleradiology
Teleradiology is expected to bring several advantages to Karnataka's healthcare system:
- Remote Access: Patients in remote areas can get expert opinions without traveling.
- Faster Reports: Radiologists can analyze images quickly, speeding up treatment.
- Cost-Effective: Reduces the need for expensive equipment at every facility.
The minister also noted that teleradiology will support existing hospitals by connecting them with specialized radiologists across the state. This is part of a broader digital health initiative by the Karnataka government.
Implementation Plan
The health department will collaborate with technology partners to set up the tele-radiology network. Training programs for technicians and doctors are being designed. A pilot phase will test the system in select districts before statewide expansion.
Rao urged private hospitals to participate in the initiative to maximize reach. He assured that patient data security and privacy will be a top priority.
