The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory for the residents of Kanpur division, warning of persistent harsh conditions over the next few days. The region is set to experience dense fog, low temperatures, and chilly winds, creating challenging circumstances for daily life.
IMD Forecast Details and Expert Analysis
According to the IMD, high humidity levels will lead to fog and mist during the morning and evening hours. While afternoon sunshine is expected, it will also increase the speed of north-westerly winds, intensifying the chill. Weather expert from CSA University, Dr. Sunil Pandey, confirmed that fluctuations in night-time temperatures will continue across the division.
Dr. Pandey stated that cold wave conditions and chilly weather are likely to prevail during the daytime as well. He attributed the persistent pollution and fog in the mornings and evenings to the high humidity, noting that the possibility of a cold wave remains high. He clarified that there is no likelihood of rainfall in the region.
Key Risks and Public Safety Advisory
The expert issued critical warnings regarding visibility and health. Dense fog could severely reduce visibility to between 0 and 20 metres, posing a major risk to road users. Dr. Pandey urged motorists to drive with extreme caution under these conditions.
He also advised senior citizens and the elderly to stay indoors as much as possible and keep themselves warm to avoid health complications arising from the intense cold.
Impact on Agriculture and Current Weather Data
Highlighting concerns for the agricultural community, Dr. Pandey said there is a possibility of frost in some areas. He advised farmers to keep their fields moist to minimise potential crop damage from the frost.
Meanwhile, specific weather data from Kanpur recorded on Wednesday morning underscores the severity:
- Minimum Temperature: 9.4 degrees Celsius
- Maximum Temperature: 16.3 degrees Celsius (2.9 degrees below normal)
- Maximum Relative Humidity: 87 per cent
- Wind: North-easterly winds at 4 to 6.8 kmph
Wind speeds are expected to increase over the next 24 hours, which will further intensify the cold sensation in the air. Residents are advised to monitor official updates and take all necessary precautions until the weather improves.
