The city of Indore is grappling with a severe public health crisis following a contaminated water incident in the Bhagirathpura area. The tragedy has claimed seven lives so far, while more than 116 people have required hospital treatment across the city.
Official Confirmation and Rising Toll
Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava confirmed the escalating numbers on Wednesday. While the Health Department's official report acknowledged three deaths, the Mayor stated that the actual figure, based on his information, has reached seven. He provided a breakdown of the medical response, noting that 36 individuals have been discharged after treatment, but a significant number remain affected.
"Our primary focus is to ensure that people receive good treatment and recover quickly," Mayor Bhargava told ANI. He emphasized that the Indore Municipal Corporation and the Health Department are working continuously to address the situation. The entire municipal council is engaged in door-to-door outreach to assist residents and ensure proper hospital care.
Swift Action from State Leadership
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav took immediate cognizance of the incident. Expressing grief and paying tributes to the deceased, he announced crucial relief measures. All affected individuals will receive free treatment, and the families of those who lost their lives will be provided with financial assistance of ₹2 lakh each.
CM Yadav also directed strict action against officials responsible for the lapse. Acting on these orders, Indore Collector Shivam Verma informed that disciplinary steps have been taken. Zonal Officer Shaligram Sitole and Assistant Engineer Yogesh Joshi have been suspended. In a more severe penalty, In-charge Sub-Engineer (PHE) Shubham Shrivastava has been dismissed from service.
Investigation Committee Formed
To probe the root cause of the contamination and the systemic failure, a three-member committee has been constituted. The investigation will be conducted under the direction of IAS officer Navjeevan Panwar. The committee includes Superintendent Engineer Pradeep Nigam and Associate Professor from the Medical College, Dr. Shailesh Rai. Their findings are expected to shed light on the circumstances that led to this tragic incident and help prevent future occurrences.
The city administration remains on high alert, with efforts concentrated on providing medical aid, containing the spread of illness, and restoring safe water supply to the affected residents of Bhagirathpura.
