Health authorities in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district have suspended the registration of Christanand Hospital in Bramhapuri and sealed its operation theatre and inpatient department following allegations that post-cataract surgery infections caused severe vision loss in at least three patients.
Action Taken After Preliminary Inquiry
On Monday, civil surgeon Dr. Mahadev Chinchole took action after a preliminary inquiry revealed violations of the Bombay Nursing Home Act, 1949, and lapses in ophthalmic care standards. The missionary-run hospital faced complaints after cataract surgeries led to infections and permanent vision loss.
Violations Found
Officials discovered that surgeries were performed without authorized eye-care beds, violating established norms. The inquiry highlighted serious breaches in medical protocols, prompting the suspension of registration and sealing of critical facilities.
Hospital Response
In response, the hospital stated that admissions have been halted and it is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation. The hospital management expressed commitment to addressing the concerns raised by health authorities.
This incident underscores the importance of strict adherence to medical standards to ensure patient safety and prevent such tragic outcomes.
