Gurgaon Hospitals on High Alert for Holi Festival Emergencies
The Gurgaon health department has implemented comprehensive arrangements across all city hospitals to manage emergency cases during the Holi festival, as medical professionals anticipate a significant increase in skin, eye, and respiratory complaints. Ophthalmologists have been specifically deployed in emergency wards at multiple hospitals to address patients suffering from eye irritation and related problems.
Round-the-Clock Medical Readiness
Authorities have directed Sector 10 Civil Hospital and sub-divisional hospitals to ensure the continuous availability of doctors throughout the festival period. Dr. Manish Rathi, deputy medical officer at Sector 10 Civil Hospital, confirmed that a dedicated medical team has been stationed at the facility, with ambulances remaining on standby for emergency responses on Holi, which falls on Wednesday. All doctors have received instructions to maintain a state of alert to handle any urgent cases.
Health Risks from Synthetic Colors
Medical experts warn that individuals with pre-existing lung conditions are particularly vulnerable to respiratory issues during Holi due to exposure to synthetic colors containing toxic chemicals. Hospitals annually report a spike in breathing-related complaints during and after the festival. To mitigate these risks, doctors strongly recommend using natural colors and wearing dust masks to protect respiratory health.
Dietary and Lifestyle Precautions Advised
Beyond external hazards, physicians also emphasize the importance of dietary and lifestyle precautions during the festive celebrations. Dr. Satish Koul, senior director of internal medicine at Fortis Hospital, highlighted that irregular meal timings, increased consumption of fried foods, sweets, and alcohol can strain the digestive system, especially for people with conditions like diabetes and fatty liver.
He provided specific recommendations to maintain well-being:
- Maintain regular meal timings and avoid skipping meals
- Stay adequately hydrated throughout the day
- Include fiber-rich foods, fruits, curd, and probiotics in the diet
- Practice moderation in portion sizes during festive meals
- Ensure adequate sleep and engage in light physical activity to support digestion and metabolism
Dr. Koul advised seeking prompt medical attention if someone experiences persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or unusual fatigue following celebrations.
Proactive Measures for Public Safety
The health department's proactive measures reflect ongoing concerns about festival-related health emergencies in Gurgaon. By deploying specialized medical personnel and ensuring emergency resources are readily available, authorities aim to minimize health risks and provide timely care during what is traditionally one of India's most vibrant and widely celebrated festivals.
