In a significant crackdown on unauthorized medical practice, officials from the Drugs Control Administration (DCA) conducted a raid on a quack's clinic located in the Karimnagar district. The operation led to the seizure of illegal drugs and steroids with an estimated value of ₹15,011.
Details of the Raid and Seizure
During the surprise inspection, DCA officers discovered a cache of unlicensed medicines stored on the premises. The officials detected a total of 39 different types of medicine. Shockingly, this inventory included 35 varieties of physician samples, which are meant for professional use and not for sale to the public.
The seized stock comprised various prescription-only medications, including a range of powerful antibiotics. Among the confiscated drugs were samples of cefixime, ofloxacin, cloxacillin, amoxycillin, and azithromycin. The raid also uncovered analgesics (painkillers) and anti-ulcer drugs, all being held without the mandatory licence required for the sale of drugs.
Serious Public Health Implications
DCA officials issued a stern warning regarding the grave dangers posed by such illicit operations. They emphasized that the indiscriminate sale of antibiotics by unqualified individuals represents a major threat to community health. One of the most severe consequences highlighted was the potential acceleration of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death. The improper use and distribution of antibiotics by untrained persons significantly contribute to this global health crisis.
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation
The officers collected samples from the seized drugs for detailed laboratory analysis to confirm their composition and quality. Authorities confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is currently underway. Legal proceedings will be initiated against all individuals found responsible for the illegal operation.
A drug inspector involved in the raid clarified the legal stance, stating, "Stocking and selling drugs without a licence is a punishable offence under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act." The inspector further noted that the violation carries a penalty of up to 5 years' imprisonment, underscoring the seriousness with which the law views such offences.
This raid is part of the DCA's ongoing efforts to cleanse the healthcare system of unauthorized and illegal practices that endanger public safety and undermine the regulated pharmaceutical trade.
