Chennai Health Department Issues Heat Advisory Amid Rising Temperatures
In response to escalating temperatures across Chennai, the Directorate of Public Health (DPH) has released an official advisory, calling on the public to adopt preventive measures against heat-related illnesses. This move comes as the city grapples with intense heatwaves, prompting health officials to emphasize the critical need for vigilance and preparedness.
Key Precautions and Public Awareness
Health authorities have outlined essential steps to mitigate risks, including staying well-hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak midday heat, and recognizing early symptoms that may indicate conditions such as heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Dr A Somasundaram, Director of Public Health, stated, "To mitigate risks, health officials have been instructed to implement comprehensive heat action plans, conduct public awareness campaigns, and strengthen healthcare capacity." The advisory warns that if temperatures continue to rise significantly above normal levels or regularly exceed 45°C, the spectrum of heat-related illnesses could expand from mild issues like rashes and cramps to severe, life-threatening complications such as heatstroke.
Hospital Preparations and Infrastructure Readiness
Government hospitals in Chennai have initiated extensive preparations to handle anticipated seasonal surges in heat-related cases. Key measures include:
- Ensuring adequate availability of beds across primary health centres, district hospitals, and medical college hospitals.
- Stocking essential medicines, Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packs, intravenous (IV) fluids, and cooling equipment.
- Equipping ambulances and allocating dedicated beds specifically for managing heat-related ailments.
Additionally, the advisory underscores the necessity of an uninterrupted power supply to hospitals to maintain air-conditioning and cooling systems. Longer-term strategies, such as cool-roofing initiatives and improved ventilation, are also being promoted to enhance resilience against extreme heat.
Surveillance and Preventive Recommendations
Mandatory surveillance of heat-related cases through designated health portals has been implemented to facilitate timely reporting and response. Dr K Shantaraman, Dean of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, emphasized the importance of preventive actions, advising, "People should avoid stepping out during peak heat hours, stay well hydrated, and seek immediate medical care if they experience dizziness, high fever, or confusion, as early intervention can prevent complications." For mass gatherings and outdoor events, organisers are required to provide sufficient drinking water, shaded areas, and medical support to safeguard participants.
This proactive approach by Chennai's health department aims to reduce the impact of heatwaves and protect public health during the challenging summer months.
