VIMS Emerges as Premier Cochlear Implant Center in Andhra Pradesh
The state-run Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) in Visakhapatnam has established itself as a crucial hub for cochlear implant surgeries, specifically catering to children suffering from severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss who receive minimal benefit from conventional hearing aids.
Significant Surgical Volume and Cost Advantage
In the initial quarter of this year alone, VIMS successfully conducted four bilateral and three unilateral cochlear implant procedures. This represents a substantial commitment to addressing pediatric hearing disabilities. While private healthcare facilities typically charge between ₹15 lakh and ₹20 lakh for a bilateral cochlear implant, VIMS provides this life-changing intervention completely free of charge under government welfare schemes, most notably the Dr NTR Vaidya Seva program.
Building Expertise and Expanding Reach
Over recent years, the hospital has performed close to 30 such intricate surgeries, allowing its surgical teams to develop and refine the specialized expertise necessary to execute these procedures independently. This growing proficiency has significantly expanded the hospital's catchment area. Patients now travel to VIMS not only from the north coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh but also from more distant regions across the state.
Director's Insights on Growth and Services
Dr K Rambabu, Director of VIMS, highlighted the institution's journey in this specialized field. "Although our cochlear implant program commenced in 2018, it has witnessed remarkable growth over the past four years," he stated. "In just the first three months of this year, we registered approximately 3,000 patients in our ENT outpatient department, with 130 requiring inpatient admission. VIMS holds the distinction of being the first hospital in Andhra Pradesh to perform bilateral cochlear implant surgeries."
The medical intervention is followed by a comprehensive rehabilitation process. Post-surgery, children undergo essential therapy to learn how to hear and speak effectively. This rehabilitation includes:
- Auditory-verbal therapy
- Specialized speech training
- Targeted listening exercises
Successful outcomes heavily depend on strong collaborative support from parents and educational institutions to help children develop crucial language, communication, and social skills.
Comprehensive ENT Services and Future Vision
Beyond its flagship cochlear implant program, VIMS offers an extensive range of ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) surgical procedures, including:
- Treatment of tonsils and adenoids
- Surgical correction of a deviated nasal septum
- Middle ear repair and eardrum reconstruction
- Management of sinusitis
- Voice therapy and airway repair
- Removal of extra bone growth behind the ear
Dr Rambabu emphasized the hospital's commitment to quality, noting, "Despite being a government institution, VIMS is matching corporate hospitals in both the quality and volume of advanced ENT procedures. Our patient numbers are rising steadily, with individuals from regions like Rayalaseema also seeking treatment here. Growing public trust in our services, combined with the prohibitive costs at private hospitals, is driving more patients to choose VIMS."
The hospital's efforts have garnered appreciation from State Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav, who has commended VIMS for its ENT services. With demand consistently increasing, Dr Rambabu confirmed plans to introduce additional specialized services in the future to better serve the community's healthcare needs.
