Vadodara's First Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair with Dermal Allograft Offers Hope
Vadodara's first advanced rotator cuff surgery performed

Residents of Vadodara suffering from debilitating shoulder pain and limited arm mobility have a new, advanced treatment option available right in their city. This follows the successful completion of Vadodara's first-ever arthroscopic rotator cuff repair surgery that utilized a dermal allograft, a biological reinforcement graft.

A Landmark Procedure for a Vadodara Patient

The pioneering surgery was performed on a 62-year-old woman from Vadodara who had been struggling with severe pain and a major restriction of movement in her left shoulder for six months. Her condition severely impacted her ability to perform routine daily tasks. The operation was conducted by consultant orthopaedic and shoulder surgeon Dr Dhruv Shah at Spandan Multispeciality Hospital on a Tuesday. Demonstrating the minimally invasive nature of the technique, the patient was discharged from the hospital within just 24 hours of the procedure.

How the Advanced Surgical Technique Works

The rotator cuff is a crucial group of tendons that stabilizes the shoulder joint and enables a wide range of arm movements. Tears in this cuff are common and lead to persistent pain, weakness, and difficulty with activities like lifting objects, combing hair, or reaching overhead. For chronic or large tears, traditional repair methods sometimes lack the necessary strength for optimal recovery.

Dr Dhruv Shah explained the breakthrough. In this advanced technique, the dermal allograft acts as a biological support patch. "The graft reinforces the tendon repair, strengthening it and promoting superior healing," said Dr Shah. This approach dramatically lowers the risk of a re-tear and enhances long-term shoulder function, even for complex or long-standing cases. The entire surgery is performed arthroscopically, using a small camera and miniature incisions. This results in minimal scarring, reduced post-operative pain, a faster recovery timeline, and a quicker return to normal daily life.

Expanding Access to Specialised Shoulder Care

Until this development, patients in Vadodara and surrounding regions who needed such sophisticated shoulder reconstruction were often forced to travel to major metropolitan cities. This new capability means specialised, high-quality shoulder care is now accessible locally.

Adding a layer of social benefit, Dr Ranjan Aiyer, the medical superintendent of the state-run SSG Hospital, noted that Dr Shah also serves as a contractual assistant professor at the government hospital. This affiliation is set to enable underprivileged patients to benefit from these advanced shoulder surgeries through the public healthcare system.

The successful introduction of this procedure marks a significant step forward for orthopaedic care in Vadodara, offering new hope and a convenient solution for countless individuals suffering from chronic shoulder problems.
