In a significant move that underscores the corporate rush into India's healthcare sector, the Torrent Group has announced a major foray into the hospital business. The diversified conglomerate, with strongholds in power and pharmaceuticals, will establish a large multispecialty hospital in Ahmedabad, marking a strategic expansion of its healthcare portfolio.
A Major Investment in Ahmedabad's Healthcare Landscape
Torrent Hospitals Private Limited, a subsidiary of the group, is set to develop a 500-plus bed hospital along the SP Ring Road. The project involves a substantial investment of over Rs 750 crore, as per official project filings. The group has acquired a land parcel measuring 13,896 square metres for Rs 247 crore from Safal Constructions India Private Limited to make this venture possible.
The proposed built-up area for the healthcare facility is a massive 95,814 square metres, which will position it among the larger private hospital developments in the city of Ahmedabad. Once fully operational, this new hospital is projected to be a significant employment generator, creating at least 2,400 jobs in the region.
Strategic Expansion and a Competitive Market
This entry into core hospital services is a logical next step for Torrent Group, building upon its earlier healthcare initiatives. The group had previously entered the diagnostics space in 2022 through Torrent Diagnostics Private Limited. The new hospital project represents a strategic pivot towards offering end-to-end healthcare solutions, seamlessly integrating its expertise in pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and now, tertiary care.
The project is currently in an advanced approval stage, with statutory and zoning clearances underway. Torrent's decision comes at a time when Ahmedabad is witnessing a sharp post-pandemic expansion in hospital bed capacity, driven largely by corporate investments.
This trend is evidenced by several other major developments in the city's healthcare sector. In 2021, Marengo Asia Healthcare acquired CIMS Hospital in a Rs 450 crore deal. Earlier this year, HCG Hospitals expanded its cancer care centre in Ahmedabad into a 217-bed facility.
Gujarat's Corporate Giants Bet Big on Healthcare
Torrent's massive investment is part of a broader wave of high-value healthcare bets being placed by Gujarat-based business houses in the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar region. The move places it alongside other corporate heavyweights who have recently announced similar plans.
In February 2025, the Adani Group unveiled plans to build an advanced multispecialty hospital in Ahmedabad. Similarly, Zydus Hospitals, which already runs a multispecialty facility on SG Road, is planning a new 290-bed hospital in the Ghodasar area. This project, with an estimated cost of Rs 105 crore, will be developed on the site of its former manufacturing plant.
Industry analysts point to several factors fueling this demand for large, multispecialty hospitals. Key drivers include higher penetration of health insurance, rising disposable incomes among the population, and a growing patient preference for comprehensive, multidisciplinary care available under a single roof. This corporate push is fundamentally reshaping the healthcare infrastructure and service delivery in one of India's most economically vibrant states.
