MKCG Hospital Doctors Perform Rare Penile Reconstruction Surgery in Berhampur
A 32-year-old man from Buguda block has received a new chance at life. Doctors at the state-run Maharaja Krishna Chandra Gajapati Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur successfully reconstructed his penis and urethra. The patient lost these organs around two months ago in a traumatic incident.
Marathon Surgery Restores Function and Form
The department of plastic and reconstructive surgery performed this first-of-its-kind procedure at the hospital. The surgery occurred in three distinct stages on November 22, December 10, and January 16. A dedicated team of doctors led the effort.
Dr. Pruthwiraj Singh, an associate professor in plastic and reconstructive surgery, headed the medical team. The definitive surgery itself required approximately nine to ten hours of continuous work. Dr. Singh provided an update on the patient's condition on Saturday.
"The patient will remain under observation for a few days in the hospital ICU," Dr. Singh stated. This careful monitoring ensures proper recovery after such an extensive operation.
Innovative Surgical Technique Employed
The medical team utilized a highly specialized approach for the reconstruction. They performed a complex penile and urethral reconstruction using a tube-in-tube free radial forearm flap with microsurgical technique.
Doctors harvested tissue from the patient's left forearm to create both a new phallus and a new urethra. The primary objectives were restoring normal urinary function and achieving an acceptable anatomical form. This technique represents a significant advancement in reconstructive surgery.
Hospital Leadership Praises Medical Team
Durga Madhab Satapathy, the superintendent of MKCG Medical College and Hospital, extended congratulations to the doctors. He commended them for successfully performing such a rare and complex marathon surgery. This achievement highlights the hospital's growing capabilities in specialized medical care.
Patient's Traumatic Journey to Recovery
The unidentified patient arrived at the hospital's emergency department under dire circumstances. He was brought in unconscious on the night of November 21 with complete amputation of his penis. Medical staff immediately began stabilization and assessment.
Authorities later identified the man as a resident of Buguda block. He had been working in Surat, Gujarat, before the incident. Reports indicate fellow passengers discovered him unconscious with severe injuries to his genital area while traveling on a train from Gujarat.
The successful reconstruction surgery at MKCG Hospital marks a remarkable medical achievement for the Berhampur region. It demonstrates how advanced surgical techniques can restore both function and dignity to patients facing catastrophic injuries.
