In a shocking incident of alleged medical negligence, a one-and-a-half-month-old infant boy had his thumb severed by a nurse at Indore's MY Hospital. The distressing event occurred in the hospital's chest ward while the nurse was removing an IV cannula from the baby, who was recovering from pneumonia.

The infant was admitted to MY Hospital for pneumonia treatment and had successfully been taken off ventilator support. He was slated for discharge within a couple of days when the unfortunate event unfolded. According to Dr. Arvind Ghanghoria, the dean of MG Medical College, the incident took place on Wednesday. The nursing officer, identified as Aarti Kshotriya, used scissors during the procedure and accidentally cut the child's finger.
Dr. Ghanghoria stated that in light of this gross carelessness, the nurse was immediately suspended from duty. As further disciplinary action, the salary for one month of a nursing in-charge and two assistant nursing in-charge officers was withheld.

The injured baby was urgently transferred to the Super Specialty Hospital in Indore, where surgeons performed an operation to re-attach the severed thumb. Medical authorities have reported that the child is now recovering well post-surgery.
Following the incident, a formal inquiry was initiated. MY Hospital superintendent Dr. Ashok Yadav was directed to investigate the matter and submit a detailed report. An inquiry committee, which included paediatrician Dr. Nirbhay Mehta, deputy superintendent Dr. Rohit Baderia, and nursing superintendent Dayavati Dayal, recorded the statement of the concerned nurse on Thursday.
