In a significant move to bolster the state's medical workforce, the Goa government has announced a substantial increase in the remuneration for doctors serving on contract at the Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital. Health Minister Vishwajit Rane declared the enhancement on Friday, stating it would be effective retrospectively from January 1 of this year.
Details of the Salary Enhancement
The revision brings a major financial uplift for postgraduate resident doctors, who are represented by the Goa Association of Resident Doctors (GARD). The monthly stipend for first-year postgraduates has been raised from Rs 60,000 to Rs 80,000. For those in their second year, the amount increases from Rs 62,500 to Rs 85,000, and third-year residents will now receive Rs 90,000, up from Rs 65,000.
Furthermore, the pay scales for teaching staff have also been revised upwards. The monthly remuneration for tutors jumps from Rs 85,000 to Rs 95,000, while lecturers will see their pay increase from Rs 95,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh per month. Minister Rane emphasized that this step underscores the government's commitment to recognizing the tireless service, dedication, and sacrifice of doctors, who form the backbone of Goa's healthcare system.
Addressing a Long-Pending Demand
This decision comes after persistent advocacy by GARD, which had met with the Chief Minister in October last year. The association had sought a revision and enhancement of the stipend, highlighting that it had remained stagnant since 2015 and was severely impacted by inflation. The hike represents the successful culmination of these efforts.
Dr. Lakshya Kumar Jha, President of GARD, hailed the revision as one of the most significant ever implemented at the institute. He credited the achievement to a collective and dialogic approach. "The collective approach adopted by all stakeholders ensured that this matter was resolved through dialogue and mutual understanding," Dr. Jha stated. He added that this milestone reflects the power of constructive communication and perseverance, serving as a testament to responsible representation.
Future Increments and Collaborative Spirit
Beyond the immediate hike, the government has also instituted a provision for a 5% annual increment for these doctors going forward. This move is expected to provide long-term financial stability and career growth prospects.
