In a profound act of generosity amidst tragedy, the family of a 61-year-old Army Medical Corps veteran consented to organ donation after he was declared dead following a road accident. This decision set in motion a complex, multi-institutional life-saving operation that spanned cities, overcoming logistical challenges to give the gift of life.
A Race Against Time and Weather
The veteran had sustained severe head injuries in a road accident on January 3. After being declared brain dead on Tuesday, his family agreed to donate his organs. A specialized retrieval team from the Army Hospital Research and Referral (R&R) in Delhi immediately sprang into action. Their journey to Lucknow was hampered by dense fog, causing delays, but they persevered, departing at 9:30 PM on Tuesday and reaching their destination by 11 PM.
Through the night, medical teams worked meticulously. By the early hours of Wednesday, they had successfully retrieved two kidneys, a liver, and a pair of corneas from the donor. The entire procedure was a testament to precision and dedication.
Seamless Coordination Across Institutions
The transplant operation showcased exceptional teamwork between major military and medical establishments. The process was led by Major General Alok Bhalla, the commandant of Command Hospital Lucknow. His core team included several key specialists:
- Col Priya Ranjan (GI Surgeon)
- Col Bharat (Urologist)
- Lt Col Sumanlata (Transplant OT Matron)
- Maj Sonam Pandey and Maj P Raifunissa (Coordinators)
- Lt Col Vivek Kumar (Anaesthesiologist)
They worked in tandem with the Delhi team, which included Col Priyaranjan and others, ensuring a flawless workflow.
The retrieved organs were swiftly allocated and transported. One kidney was transplanted into a patient at Command Hospital, Lucknow, who is now reported to be stable. The liver was rushed to Delhi for another recipient. The corneas were preserved for future sight-restoring surgeries. Unfortunately, the second kidney, which was designated for SGPGIMS Lucknow, was found unfit for transplantation.
A Legacy of Service and Sacrifice
This noble act marks the second organ transplant procedure at Command Hospital Lucknow in the past three months, underscoring the growing capability and commitment of military medical services in this critical field. Following the procedure, military officials paid their solemn respects to the veteran, honoring his final act of service. They issued a certificate of appreciation and facilitated the dignified transfer of his mortal remains.
The story transcends the medical achievement, highlighting a powerful culture of donation and the unwavering spirit of service that defines the armed forces community. Even in death, the veteran continued to serve his nation, offering others a chance at life.
