Miracle in Navi Mumbai: 23-Week Micro-Preemie Survives After 78 Days
23-week micro-preemie survives 78-day NICU stay

In a remarkable story of survival and medical excellence, an extremely premature infant, known as a 'micro-preemie,' has beaten overwhelming odds after being born at just 23 weeks of gestation. The baby boy, who weighed a mere 690 grams at birth, has survived following an intensive 78-day stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Motherhood Hospital in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai.

A Fragile Beginning and a Daunting Journey

The child was born to a couple from Mumbra on August 1, 2025, at 23 weeks and 6 days gestation. The birth was prompted by serious pregnancy complications, including oligohydramnios and maternal fever. Initially delivered at a local hospital, the fragile newborn was immediately transferred to the specialized NICU at Motherhood Hospital for the advanced care critical for his survival.

Dr. Anish Pillai, Lead Consultant in Neonatology and Paediatrics, described the infant's condition upon arrival as extremely fragile. "When the baby arrived, he was extremely fragile and weighed just 690 grams," Dr. Pillai stated. "Babies born this early face many challenges because their organs are not ready to function independently. Our priority was to stabilise his breathing and protect him from infections."

Overcoming Critical Health Complications

The micro-preemie's fight for life was fraught with numerous severe health challenges. His medical team had to manage a cascade of complications, including:

  • Respiratory distress syndrome
  • Apnea of prematurity
  • A large patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)
  • Anemia and neonatal jaundice
  • Feeding intolerance
  • Weak immunity and bone fragility

His comprehensive treatment plan was extensive. It involved mechanical ventilation to support his breathing, surfactant therapy to aid his underdeveloped lungs, and parenteral nutrition. He also required antibiotics, tube feeding, and relentless, close monitoring of his cardiac, respiratory, and metabolic functions.

A Triumphant Discharge and Continued Progress

After 78 days of dedicated, round-the-clock care, the medical team's efforts culminated in a triumphant success. The infant's lung function steadily improved, the life-threatening PDA closed with treatment, and his blood and bone parameters stabilized. A significant milestone was reached when feeding was gradually advanced from tube feeds to full breastfeeding.

The baby was finally discharged from the hospital in a stable condition, having achieved a weight of 1.92 kilograms. According to the latest updates from the doctors, the child continues to show expected developmental progress and now weighs a healthy 2.56 kg. This case stands as a powerful testament to the advances in neonatal care and the resilience of the tiniest patients.
