SGPGIMS Doctors Remove 1.25kg Brain Tumour from Bihar Man's Skull
1.25kg Brain Tumour Removed in Complex Surgery at SGPGIMS

In a remarkable feat of medical expertise, a team of surgeons at Lucknow's Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) has successfully removed an enormous 1.25-kilogram brain tumour from a young patient. The tumour had grown through the patient's skull, creating a visible protrusion on his forehead and causing severe facial deformity.

A Life Transformed by a Massive Tumour

The patient, Nitesh Kumar, a 23-year-old resident of Saran district in Bihar, had been living with the massive growth for a significant period. The tumour led to abnormal bulging of his eyes and severe facial disfigurement, which forced him to withdraw from social life. His condition was so severe that he was referred to the specialised neurosurgery department at SGPGIMS for advanced intervention.

The Intricate Multi-Stage Surgical Procedure

The medical team adopted a meticulous, two-stage approach to ensure the surgery's success and patient safety. First, a critical pre-surgical step was undertaken by Dr. Vivek and Dr. Suryakant. They performed a neuro-interventional procedure to significantly reduce the tumour's blood supply. This step was vital to minimise potentially life-threatening blood loss during the main operation.

The actual tumour removal was an intricate surgery led by Prof. Arun Kumar Srivastava and Prof. Kuntal Kanti Das from the department of neurosurgery. They were supported by Dr. Swarjit and nursing officer Sister Vandana. Given the tumour's size and complex location, a multidisciplinary team was assembled. This team included head and neck surgeon Prof. Amit Keshari, plastic surgeon Dr. Anupama, and an anaesthesia team comprising Dr. Sumit, Dr. Sapna, and Dr. Nidhi.

Using advanced microsurgical techniques, the doctors carefully navigated the delicate brain structures to excise the entire 1.25kg mass. The procedure is considered one of the most challenging ever undertaken at the prestigious institute.

Restoring Health and Hope

The surgery was a complete success. Doctors hailed the safe removal of such a large tumour as a significant achievement in medical science. Following the operation, Nitesh Kumar made a full recovery. More importantly, he regained not just his physical health but also his confidence, allowing him to return to a normal social life.

The patient and his family expressed profound gratitude to the entire medical team for giving him a new lease on life. The SGPGIMS administration praised the coordinated effort, highlighting it as an inspiring example of the institute's advanced medical capabilities and clinical expertise.
