Medical Milestone: 106-Year-Old Woman Undergoes Successful Gallbladder Surgery
In a remarkable display of medical expertise, Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur has achieved a rare surgical feat. The hospital successfully performed a high-risk laparoscopic procedure on a 106-year-old woman, removing her gallbladder and extracting stones from her common bile duct.
Patient Details and Medical Condition
The patient, identified as Banarsi, is a resident of Jhunjhunu. She was admitted to the hospital's surgery department with a serious condition involving gallbladder stones along with stones lodged in her common bile duct. This combination can trigger severe pain, infection, jaundice, and other dangerous complications if not treated promptly.
After thorough examination, doctors determined that surgical removal of the gallbladder, known medically as cholecystectomy, was necessary. The decision to proceed with surgery at such an advanced age required careful consideration of multiple risk factors.
The Complex Surgical Procedure
The complex operation was carried out by doctors from Surgical Unit-2 using advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques. "The surgery involved high risk due to the age of the patient," explained Dr. Amit Jain, senior professor of general surgery at SMS Hospital.
Dr. Jain detailed the two-stage procedure: "We conducted post-operative care to reduce risk by examining her heart health and other parameters. The doctors first removed stones from the common bile duct endoscopically on Wednesday. After stabilizing her condition, they prepared her for removal of her gallbladder. The surgery was completed Friday in 45 minutes without any complications."
The medical team took extensive precautions throughout the process. "We took precautions, as she was quite old and could develop anesthesia-related or age-related complications," Dr. Jain emphasized.
Medical Rationale and Outcomes
Doctors clarified that proceeding with surgery despite the patient's advanced age was medically justified. "At any age, gallbladder with stones should be removed to avoid any complications such as cancer, pancreatitis and other such issues," said Dr. Jain. The medical team noted that leaving the condition untreated carried significant cancer risks.
The patient remained stable post-surgery and was discharged after just 24 hours of observation. Hospital officials confirmed her successful recovery and timely discharge on Saturday.
A Rare Medical Achievement
Dr. Jain highlighted the exceptional nature of this case: "Such a successful outcome at 106 years is extremely rare and could be the first reported case of its kind for SMS Hospital." This achievement underscores both careful patient management and advanced surgical expertise at the medical facility.
The successful procedure demonstrates that age alone should not be an absolute barrier to necessary surgical interventions when proper medical protocols and expertise are applied. This case serves as an important reference point for geriatric surgical care and highlights the capabilities of modern minimally invasive surgical techniques.
