UPUMS Saifai to Establish 250-Bed Trauma Centre Near Agra-Lucknow Expressway

The Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences (UPUMS), Saifai, is set to establish a 250-bed level-1 trauma centre near the Agra-Lucknow Expressway. This initiative aims to ensure rapid and effective treatment for accident victims and other emergency patients, as confirmed by an official statement released on Tuesday.

Key Decisions from the Board Meeting

The decision was made during the second meeting of the university’s Board of Governors, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in his capacity as chancellor. The proposed trauma centre will be located approximately 10 kilometres from the university campus, strategically positioned to reduce the time taken in shifting patients from the expressway for medical care.

Chief Minister Adityanath emphasized, "The expressway is located about 10 kilometers away from the university campus, due to which valuable time is lost in treating accident victims. The proposed trauma centre will be operated by the university to address this critical gap."

Expansion of Healthcare Services

In addition to the trauma centre, several other significant decisions were taken to enhance health services and medical education at UPUMS:

  • Centre for Rural Health: Adityanath directed the establishment of a ‘Centre for Rural Health’ at the university, focusing on tele-OPD, virtual OPD, digital data integration, and mobile outreach services to meet the healthcare needs of rural areas.
  • Hub-and-Spoke Model: The statement highlighted that this model will be effectively implemented to improve the reach and quality of healthcare services across the region.
  • Integrative Medicine Unit: The Board decided to set up an Integrative Medicine Unit, which will provide patient-centric treatment by integrating allopathic and AYUSH systems. This unit will include integrative OPDs, specialty clinics, and yoga and wellness units in cooperation with the AYUSH Department.
  • Community Broadcast Service: To strengthen health awareness and public outreach, a community broadcast service will be launched to disseminate information on disease prevention, government health schemes, and educational content.

Focus on Quality and Innovation

The chief minister instructed that UPUMS be developed as an effective centre for high-quality healthcare, education, and research for western and central Uttar Pradesh. He stressed the importance of quality, sensitivity, and timeliness in treatment, teaching, and research. Emphasizing innovation in the health and medical sector, Adityanath directed that best practices from leading medical and academic institutions in the country be studied and incorporated into UPUMS’s operations.

These initiatives are part of a broader effort to expand health services, strengthen super-specialty facilities, and provide a new direction to medical education and research in Uttar Pradesh, ensuring better healthcare access and outcomes for residents.
