PGI Chandigarh's Critical Care Block Gets Green Light with Environmental Clearance
PGI's Critical Care Block Clears Environmental Hurdle

Environmental Clearance Paves Way for PGI Chandigarh's Critical Care Block

The long-awaited Critical Care Block at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh has finally received the crucial grant of environmental clearance, clearing the decks for construction to commence. PGI Deputy Director of Administration, Pankaj Rai, confirmed that this approval marks a significant milestone for the institute's infrastructure expansion.

Overcoming Delays and Moving Forward

The project had faced a substantial delay of several months due to pending environmental clearance. With this hurdle now overcome, construction work has been officially allotted to the Hospital Services Consultancy Corporation Limited (HSCC) India. This development signals the beginning of tangible progress on a facility that promises to transform critical care delivery at one of North India's premier medical institutions.

A Pandemic-Inspired Necessity

According to official statements, the Critical Care Block was not originally part of PGI's master plan. The devastating Covid-19 pandemic exposed critical gaps in dedicated infrastructure for managing infectious disease outbreaks and mass critical care situations. During the crisis, the institute had to convert several departments and the Nehru Extension Block into makeshift Covid-19 care facilities to handle the unprecedented surge of critically ill patients.

Recognizing this urgent need, the Central government approved the project under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), positioning it as one of PGI's most important upcoming facilities.

Comprehensive Facility Design and Capabilities

The 150-bed Critical Care Block will be constructed on a vacant plot opposite the School of Nursing within the PGI campus. Once operational, it will function as a multispecialty centre with comprehensive capabilities:

  • Intensive Care Units (ICUs) for the most critically ill patients
  • Step-down Units (SDUs) for patients transitioning from intensive care
  • Specialized isolation wards for infectious disease containment
  • Oxygen-supported beds and advanced surgical units
  • Two fully equipped labour rooms with delivery and recovery facilities
  • A dedicated neonatal care unit for newborns with critical conditions

Strategic Importance and Patient Benefits

"The Critical Care Block is a strategically important project for the institute and has been under planning for a considerable time," emphasized Pankaj Rai. "The facility is expected to significantly benefit patients requiring specialized and intensive care."

Once functional, the new block will centralize treatment for critically ill and infectious disease patients under one roof, dramatically enhancing PGI's emergency response capacity. It will specifically cater to:

  1. Patients requiring intensive monitoring and advanced life support
  2. Those arriving at emergency and trauma centres in critical condition
  3. Referrals from any department needing advanced critical care

Broader Institutional Context and Future Preparedness

The Critical Care Block represents part of a broader infrastructure expansion at PGI. Currently, two other major projects—the Neurosciences Centre and the Mother and Child Care Centre—are expected to become operational this year, though both faced delays due to the pandemic.

Hospital officials note that by centralizing advanced critical care services, the new block will allow other clinical areas to function more effectively without the burden of managing the most complex cases. Experts believe that in the event of future pandemics or similar public health emergencies, this dedicated facility will play a crucial role in managing patient loads efficiently and preventing the kind of systemic overwhelm experienced during Covid-19.

The environmental clearance represents not just bureaucratic approval but a green light for enhanced healthcare resilience in Northern India, with PGI Chandigarh poised to significantly strengthen its capacity to handle medical crises of unprecedented scale.
