Health Experts Urge Mandatory Check-ups for Char Dham Pilgrims in Uttarakhand

In a significant move to safeguard the well-being of pilgrims, renowned cardiologist and Padma Shri awardee, Professor Dr SC Manchanda, has issued crucial advisories for those embarking on the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. Emphasizing the need for mandatory pre-travel health check-ups, Dr Manchanda highlighted the importance of a gradual ascent to higher altitudes and adequate acclimatization to prevent altitude-related illnesses.

Seminar Focuses on Pilgrim Safety

Dr Manchanda, along with medical experts from various states, participated in a one-day seminar titled 'Medical Problems and Road Accidents Safety Measures during the Char Dham Yatra'. Organized by Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University (HNBUMU) at Lok Bhawan in Dehradun on Wednesday, the event featured multiple sessions, including a book launch and technical discussions on health concerns faced by pilgrims and medical staff during the yatra season.

Dr Manchanda advised travelers to halt at moderate altitudes for the first one or two days, as all four shrines are situated at high elevations, to allow the body to adjust properly. This recommendation aims to reduce risks such as acute mountain sickness and other cardiovascular issues.

Expert Recommendations for Health and Safety

Senior cardiologist Dr Bhanu Duggal, vice chancellor of HNBUMU, stressed the importance of regular health monitoring for pilgrims. He urged travelers to check their pulse oxygen levels and blood pressure frequently, take prescribed medications without fail, and seek immediate medical attention at the nearest facility if any warning symptoms arise.

On the topic of road safety, Dr Pankaj Singh, head of orthopedics at Govt Medical College in Haldwani, outlined three key precautions: ensuring vehicle readiness, driver preparedness, and appropriate emergency response. He emphasized that these measures could be game-changers in curbing road accidents during the yatra.

Government and Leadership Support

Uttarakhand Health Minister Subodh Uniyal highlighted the critical role of timely medical intervention in saving lives. He called for strengthening the emergency medical response infrastructure and enhancing trauma care facilities across the pilgrimage route to better handle emergencies.

During the seminar, a handbook titled 'Travel Advisory for Char Dham Pilgrimage' was launched to provide comprehensive guidance to pilgrims. Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (retd) asserted that 'caution alongside faith' should serve as the guiding mantra for the Char Dham Yatra, which is set to resume later this month. He encouraged pilgrims to prioritize safety while undertaking this spiritual journey.

The collective efforts of medical experts and government officials aim to ensure a safer and healthier experience for all pilgrims participating in the upcoming Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand.
