Kidney and heart disease treatments have emerged as the top claims under Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister's Health Insurance Scheme. Recent data from the Tamil Nadu State Health Systems Project reveals this significant trend.
Dialysis Leads Procedure Choices
Dialysis continues to be the most frequently chosen procedure under the insurance scheme. Angiography-stenting and cardiac bypass surgery follow closely behind in popularity.
Premium Payment for 2026-27
On Monday, Health Minister Ma Subramanian presented a cheque worth 1,237.80 crore rupees to United India Insurance Corporation Ltd. This payment covers the annual premium for the 2026-27 period.
The scheme provides substantial health coverage of up to 5 lakh rupees for more than 1.45 crore families across Tamil Nadu. This represents a major commitment to public health security.
Scheme Expansion and Growth
Originally initiated by late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, this health insurance program has grown into one of Tamil Nadu's most significant welfare initiatives. The minister highlighted several key expansions during the premium payment ceremony.
The premium contribution per family increased from 691 rupees to 849 rupees. Simultaneously, the annual family income eligibility threshold rose substantially from 72,000 rupees to 1.2 lakh rupees.
Enhanced Coverage Benefits
Insurance coverage per family jumped from 2 lakh rupees to 5 lakh rupees. Treatment options expanded dramatically from 1,090 procedures to 2,053 available procedures.
Participating hospitals increased from 970 to 2,157 institutions across the state. This wider network ensures better accessibility for beneficiaries seeking medical care.
High-End Treatment Expansion
The scheme now includes eight high-end treatments, a significant increase from the original two options. New additions cover liver surgeries, kidney procedures, bone marrow operations, and stem cell therapies.
Among these advanced treatments, renal transplants and cochlear transplants have become particularly popular choices. Patients are increasingly opting for these sophisticated medical interventions.
The insurance scheme continues to evolve, offering more comprehensive healthcare protection to Tamil Nadu's residents. Its growth reflects the government's commitment to improving health outcomes across the state.
