KGMU Lucknow Announces Major Expansion with New Seven-Storey OPD Complex

In a significant development for healthcare infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh, King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow is set to construct a state-of-the-art seven-storey multi-specialty Outpatient Department (OPD) complex. The announcement was made by Vice-Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand on Tuesday, marking a major step toward addressing long-standing issues of patient congestion and service fragmentation at the premier medical institution.

Government Land Allocation for Healthcare Enhancement

The UP government has allocated land previously belonging to the Government Girls' Inter College to KGMU specifically for this expansion project. This strategic land transfer underscores the state administration's commitment to improving public healthcare facilities and patient care standards. The new complex represents a focused effort to transform outpatient services by creating a centralized, efficient system that prioritizes patient comfort and accessibility.

Addressing Current Patient Challenges

Currently, KGMU's OPD services operate from multiple scattered buildings across the campus, including the new OPD block and specialized departments for cardiology, gynaecology, mental health, respiratory medicine, orthopaedics, and rheumatology. This fragmented arrangement creates substantial inconvenience for patients, particularly those requiring consultations across multiple specialties. With approximately 7,000 to 8,000 patients visiting daily from across Uttar Pradesh and neighboring states, the existing infrastructure struggles to manage the overwhelming patient load efficiently.

Comprehensive Facilities Under One Roof

Prof Nityanand emphasized that once operational, the new OPD complex will eliminate the need for patients to enter the main campus for outpatient consultations. The building will feature expansive waiting areas with seating capacity for more than 200 patients outside each doctor's chamber, significantly enhancing comfort for patients and their attendants. The primary objective is to consolidate all essential outpatient services within a single, organized environment that streamlines the healthcare experience.

Integrated Diagnostic and Support Services

The seven-storey complex will house comprehensive medical facilities designed to minimize patient movement between buildings. Key features include:

  • Dedicated blood collection counters for efficient sample processing
  • Full-range diagnostic facilities including radiology services
  • Advanced imaging capabilities such as CT scan, X-ray, ECG, and ultrasound
  • Separate counters for registration, report distribution, and fee collection

This integrated approach aims to optimize patient flow, reduce waiting times, and create a more systematic healthcare delivery system. The centralized model is expected to particularly benefit patients with complex medical needs requiring multiple diagnostic procedures and specialist consultations.

Transforming Patient Experience at KGMU

The new OPD complex represents a paradigm shift in how outpatient services are delivered at one of North India's most prominent medical institutions. By addressing the critical issues of overcrowding and service fragmentation, KGMU aims to set new standards for patient-centered care in government healthcare facilities. The project aligns with broader efforts to enhance medical infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh while improving accessibility and quality of healthcare services for residents across the region.
