In a significant move to enhance healthcare delivery, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has issued directives to the state's health department to formulate a new 'essential drugs list'. This initiative aims to guarantee the consistent availability of high-quality medicines for patients across all government health institutions in Himachal Pradesh.
High-Powered Committee to Oversee Drug List Approval
Chairing a comprehensive review meeting of the health department on Wednesday, CM Sukhu emphasized that the proposed essential drugs list will undergo rigorous examination and final approval by a high-power committee. This step is designed to uphold stringent standards of efficacy and safety, ensuring that only the most necessary and reliable medications are included in the state's healthcare system.
Strategic Shift in Procurement to Eliminate Middlemen
Highlighting the need for systemic reforms, Sukhu pointed out that the transition towards direct procurement of medicines from manufacturers is a strategic measure, not merely a cost-cutting exercise. By bypassing intermediaries, this approach is expected to significantly reduce delays, improve transparency, and secure an uninterrupted supply of life-saving drugs. The Chief Minister assured that adequate provisions will be implemented to maintain a steady inventory of essential medicines in public hospitals, thereby preventing stockouts and ensuring patient care is not compromised.
Strengthening Quality Testing Mechanisms
To further bolster drug safety, CM Sukhu has instructed officials to reinforce the mechanisms for sampling and quality testing of medicines supplied to government health facilities. Dedicated quality-testing cells will be established in each medical college across the state, equipped with sufficient staffing, specialized training, and modern equipment. In the initial phase, these cells will be set up at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla and Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College in Tanda, Kangra district, setting a benchmark for quality assurance in healthcare.

In a firm stance on pharmaceutical standards, Sukhu has mandated strict quality checks for medicines produced by pharmaceutical companies within Himachal Pradesh.
