Nagpur Hospital and MOIL Limited Launch Free Knee Replacement Surgery Program
In a significant healthcare development, the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (Mayo) in Nagpur has forged a strategic partnership with MOIL Limited to offer completely free knee replacement surgeries to patients who are not covered under any existing government health scheme. This initiative, undertaken under the direct guidance of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, is specifically designed to bridge critical gaps in access to high-cost orthopaedic procedures for the most vulnerable populations.
Targeting Economically Weaker Patients in Mining Regions
IGGMCH dean Dr. Ravi Chavan has clarified that the benefit will be extended to economically weaker patients residing within a 10-kilometer radius of mining areas in both Nagpur and Bhandara districts. Additionally, patients admitted to the hospital from rural regions will also be eligible for this program. To identify and reach eligible beneficiaries, comprehensive screening camps will be organized in the mining belts by a collaborative effort involving the state health department, IGGMCH, and MOIL Limited.
MOIL operates a total of four mines in Nagpur district and two mines in Bhandara district, areas which are home to a significant tribal population. This geographical focus makes the initiative particularly impactful for communities that often face substantial barriers to specialized medical care.
Addressing a Massive Orthopaedic Need in Maharashtra
According to official estimates, Maharashtra's population aged above 40 stands at nearly 4 crore (40 million). Out of this, approximately 40 lakh (4 million) individuals suffer from arthritis and various other debilitating joint disorders. Shockingly, nearly 10 lakh (1 million) of these patients are estimated to require joint replacement surgery, highlighting a massive unmet medical need across the state.
The orthopaedics department at IGGMCH performed over 125 joint replacement surgeries in the previous year, primarily under the coverage of schemes like the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana and the central government's Ayushman Bharat. Despite these efforts, a considerable number of patients remain excluded from such benefits due to a lack of proper documentation or not meeting specific eligibility constraints.
High Costs and Corporate Social Responsibility Support
Knee replacement procedures typically carry a hefty price tag, ranging from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹3 lakh per knee in private hospitals across India. This cost makes the surgery utterly unaffordable for a vast majority of economically disadvantaged patients, forcing many to live with chronic pain and disability.
"Through MOIL's dedicated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support, we will be able to conduct around 100 joint replacement surgeries annually," stated Dr. M Faisal, professor and head of the orthopaedics department at IGGMCH. He emphasized that this landmark initiative is poised to ensure that no eligible patient is denied this life-changing treatment due to financial hardships or procedural barriers. The program represents a vital step toward equitable healthcare access for orthopaedic needs in the region.
