AIIMS Guwahati Unveils Advanced Neurosurgical OT with CSR Support

Guwahati: AIIMS Guwahati has significantly strengthened its super-specialty healthcare services in the northeastern region with the formal inauguration of its advanced neurosurgical operation theatre (OT) facility, officials confirmed on Sunday.

The cutting-edge neurosurgical OT was established with financial support of Rs 6.5 crore from Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. According to a government release, the funding facilitated the acquisition of state-of-the-art neurosurgical equipment designed to enhance precision, safety, and outcomes in complex brain and spine surgeries.

The facility was formally inaugurated by Prof. (Dr) Ashok Puranik, executive director of AIIMS Guwahati, in the presence of dignitaries including Surendra Kumar Majhi, senior general manager and head of project at PGCIL.

Prof. Puranik highlighted the importance of corporate partnerships in healthcare, stating, “Corporates have come forward to partner in providing advanced, high-cost equipment required for complex and delicate neurological procedures. Their role in supporting healthcare goes beyond sustainability.” He added, “Many patients with brain tumours, vascular malformations, nerve injuries, and spinal conditions have benefited from the timely availability of this advanced equipment. These contributions are need-based, with no strings attached, reflecting a genuine corporate intent to support community healthcare, improve affordability, and ensure better outcomes.”

Prof. Puranik also emphasized the significance of such collaborations in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in emerging institutions and reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to delivering high-quality, accessible care to the people of the northeast.

Surendra Kumar Majhi reiterated PGCIL’s dedication to supporting social development through impactful CSR initiatives, particularly in the healthcare sector, and expressed hope that the new facility would greatly benefit patients requiring neurosurgical care in the region.

The advanced neurosurgical OT is expected to significantly enhance the capacity of AIIMS Guwahati to handle complex neurological cases, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the region for treatment. This development marks a major step forward in improving healthcare access and outcomes in northeast India.
