Tragic Death of Woman at Udupi Special School Following Suspected Food Poisoning

A 32-year-old woman, who had been residing at a special school in Karkala, Udupi district, for the past two years, has tragically died at Wenlock District Hospital in Mangaluru after reportedly suffering from suspected food poisoning. The incident has prompted a police investigation and raised concerns about health and safety protocols at the facility.

Details of the Deceased and the Incident

The deceased has been identified as Mohini, aged 32. According to a complaint filed by her brother, Srinivasa, aged 39 and a resident of Ucchangi Nagar in Karkala taluk, Mohini had been staying at a special school located in Ayyappanagar for the previous two years. The complaint outlines the sequence of events leading to her untimely death.

On the morning of February 21, around 10 am, Mohini began showing symptoms that were suspected to be related to food poisoning. She was initially taken to the primary health centre in Nakre for immediate medical attention. As her condition did not improve, she was subsequently shifted to the Karkala Taluk Hospital for further care and monitoring.

Escalation of Medical Treatment and Fatal Outcome

Unfortunately, Mohini's health continued to deteriorate, necessitating more advanced medical intervention. On February 22, she was admitted to Wenlock District Hospital in Mangaluru, a larger facility equipped to handle critical cases. Despite receiving intensive treatment, Mohini succumbed to her condition and died while undergoing care at the hospital on Tuesday.

The sudden and tragic loss has left her family and the local community in shock, highlighting the potential severity of foodborne illnesses and the importance of prompt medical response.

Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings

In response to the complaint filed by Srinivasa, the Karkala Town police have taken official action. They have registered an unnatural death report (UDR) under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which governs procedures for investigating deaths under suspicious circumstances. This registration marks the beginning of a formal inquiry into the incident.

Further investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of Mohini's illness and death. Authorities are likely examining factors such as the source of the suspected food poisoning, the timeline of medical treatment, and any potential negligence or lapses in safety standards at the special school. The police are expected to interview witnesses, review medical records, and inspect the premises as part of their probe.

This case underscores the critical need for stringent food safety measures and robust healthcare systems, especially in institutions caring for vulnerable populations. As the investigation progresses, more details may emerge regarding the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.
