Centre OKs ₹755-Crore Third Rail Line for Champa-Korba

The Centre has approved a ₹755-crore third railway line between Champa and Korba, a move expected to boost coal transportation from one of the country's key power-producing regions and ease congestion on a busy freight corridor in Chhattisgarh.

Enhancing Rail Capacity

The third line is expected to enhance rail capacity on the Champa-Korba section, a crucial corridor that connects coalfields operated by South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) and Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) to the national rail network.

The state government said the project would improve movement of coal from mines in the Korba belt, strengthen logistics for thermal power plants, and help meet the country's growing energy demand. Officials also expect the additional line to reduce rail traffic congestion and improve operational efficiency, creating scope for more passenger services in the future.

Energy Capital of the Country

Calling Korba the country's "energy capital", Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the project would not only strengthen energy security but also support industrial growth and economic activity in Korba, Janjgir-Champa, and adjoining districts through improved connectivity. The approval comes amid a series of railway expansion projects in the state. According to the chief minister, railway infrastructure projects worth more than ₹51,000 crore are currently under implementation in Chhattisgarh, including new rail lines, doubling works, and additional freight corridors.

Sai also cited the recently notified Dharamjaigarh-Pathalgaon-Lohardaga rail line as a special railway project and said railway connectivity in the state was expanding at an unprecedented pace.

Increased Budget Allocation

The state government said the railway budget allocation for Chhattisgarh has increased significantly over the past decade and that 32 railway stations are currently being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at an estimated cost of ₹1,680 crore.

Railway officials believe the Champa-Korba third line will be particularly significant for freight operations, given the heavy coal traffic originating from the Korba coalfields and the growing demand for faster evacuation of coal to power plants across the country.
