Uttar Pradesh Government Earmarks Rs 2,246 Crore for SGPGIMS Lucknow's Advanced Healthcare Transformation

The Uttar Pradesh government has made a significant budgetary commitment in the 2026-27 fiscal plan, allocating a substantial Rs 2,246 crore to the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow. This funding is strategically directed toward establishing a cutting-edge quaternary healthcare centre, marking a major leap in specialized medical infrastructure for the state.

Capital Expenditure Breakdown for Infrastructure and Equipment

According to detailed budget documents, the allocation includes Rs 959 crore specifically designated for capital expenditure. This capital outlay is further divided into two key components:

  • Rs 359 crore for major construction works, laying the foundation for new facilities and expansions.
  • Rs 500 crore for procuring advanced machinery, equipment, and plant infrastructure to support high-tech medical operations.

The government has emphasized that this year's focus on large-scale construction and sophisticated equipment will directly fuel the development of a dedicated quaternary healthcare medical centre at SGPGIMS. Quaternary healthcare represents the pinnacle of medical care, characterized by its use of cutting-edge technology, expert multidisciplinary teams, and comprehensive services typically found only at premier institutions.

Comprehensive 500-Bed Integrated Centre with Specialized Services

Under this ambitious initiative, SGPGIMS will establish a 500-bed, state-of-the-art integrated centre designed to consolidate a wide array of specialized medical disciplines under one roof. This facility will bring together:

  1. Cardiac sciences
  2. Neurosciences
  3. Renal sciences
  4. Gastrointestinal and hepatic services
  5. Critical care units
  6. Maternal and foetal medicine
  7. Oncology departments
  8. Gene and cell therapy facilities
  9. Genomic services for rare diseases

Additionally, an extra Rs 100 crore has been proposed to equip the trauma centre, enhancing emergency and critical care capabilities.

Revenue Allocation and Patient Care Provisions

On the revenue side, the budget allocates Rs 1,287 crore, which includes:

  • Rs 900 crore for salary grants to support medical and administrative staff.
  • Rs 375 crore for non-salary components, covering operational expenses and maintenance.

Provisions for patient care have also been thoughtfully integrated into the budget. Specifically, Rs 10 crore has been set aside for medicines and chemicals to bolster 24-hour free treatment facilities, ensuring uninterrupted access to essential healthcare. Furthermore, Rs 2 crore is earmarked for providing free treatment to Below Poverty Line (BPL) individuals, destitute patients, and those who are critically ill, underscoring a commitment to equitable healthcare access.

This comprehensive budgetary move by the Uttar Pradesh government aims to transform SGPGIMS Lucknow into a hub of quaternary healthcare, leveraging advanced technology and specialized services to address complex medical needs and improve health outcomes across the region.
