Surat's Street Food Scene Faces Adulteration Crisis as Seizures Skyrocket
Surat Food Adulteration Seizures Jump 13-Fold in 2025

Surat's Culinary Reputation Under Threat as Food Adulteration Cases Multiply

Surat, a city celebrated across India for its vibrant street food culture and discerning food lovers, is confronting a growing crisis of food adulteration that threatens its gastronomic legacy. Recent data from the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) reveals a startling escalation in the seizure of adulterated, substandard, and counterfeit food products throughout the city.

Alarming Spike in Adulterated Food Seizures

The health department of the Surat Municipal Corporation has documented a dramatic increase in food safety violations, with seizures of unsafe food products multiplying more than thirteen times in 2025 compared to the previous year. This sharp rise has been directly attributed to intensified, coordinated raids conducted jointly by the civic body's food safety department and local police forces.

Financial figures highlight the scale of this problem. While SMC confiscated adulterated ghee, paneer, cheese, and other food items valued at Rs 14.23 lakh in 2024, this amount skyrocketed to an astonishing Rs 1.96 crore in 2025. The quantitative data is equally concerning: the civic body seized 4,860 kilograms of unsafe food products in 2024, but this quantity surged to 75,356 kilograms in the following year.

Fake Dairy Products Flooding Surat's Food Establishments

Officials investigating these cases have identified a troubling pattern. Many of the seized products were being manufactured using raw materials completely unrelated to milk, yet were being fraudulently marketed and sold as genuine milk-based items. These adulterated dairy products were being widely distributed to numerous eateries across Surat, where they were incorporated into daily food preparation in substantial quantities.

"Our surveillance and enforcement drives continue throughout the entire year," explained an official from the food safety department. "Testing is conducted at outlets selected through random sampling or based on specific consumer complaints. Our teams perform comprehensive checks of food establishments, evaluating multiple parameters alongside detailed food testing procedures."

Expanded Surveillance and Inspection Protocols

To combat this growing menace, SMC has implemented an enhanced monitoring system. The corporation has deployed dedicated teams of food safety officers across all nine administrative zones of the city to conduct regular inspections of food outlets during daytime hours. Recently, the department has expanded its operations to include night-time surveillance, recognizing that many food establishments begin their operations late in the evening.

Each inspection team comprises three qualified food safety officers who conduct thorough evaluations. During these visits, officials assess multiple aspects of food safety and hygiene:

  • Comprehensive examination of hygiene conditions within and around the food outlet
  • Verification of proper waste disposal arrangements and sanitation practices
  • Detailed inspection of food items with sample collection from suspicious products
  • Review of all legal documents required for operating the food establishment

For restaurants specifically, officials additionally collect and verify health certificates of all employees working at the establishment, ensuring compliance with public health regulations.

Laboratory Testing and Legal Consequences

Samples collected during these raids undergo rigorous testing at the SMC's dedicated laboratory facility. When food items are scientifically confirmed to be unfit for human consumption, the offending outlet faces significant penalties through the municipal court system. This legal framework provides teeth to the enforcement efforts, creating meaningful consequences for violations that endanger public health.

The expanded surveillance represents a proactive approach to protecting Surat's residents and visitors from potentially harmful food products. As the city continues to grapple with this adulteration challenge, authorities remain committed to preserving the integrity of Surat's renowned food culture while ensuring the safety of every meal served across its diverse culinary landscape.
