Bhubaneswar: The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, along with several other locations in Odisha, experienced light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms on Wednesday, providing a slight respite from the intense heat and rising temperatures. The precipitation, coupled with lightning and gusty winds, led to uprooted trees and broken branches, which temporarily disrupted power supply and communication in some areas.
Relief for Residents
Residents welcomed the weather change. Priyabrata Sahu, a resident of Patia, said, "This rainfall brought some relief from the scorching heat we experienced over the past few days." The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded rainfall data up to 5:30 PM, with Jajpur and Bhadrak towns receiving the highest amounts of 12.6 mm and 12.4 mm, respectively. However, rainfall after 5:30 PM was still being compiled.
Temperature Trends
The rain and thunderstorm activity over the past 24 hours caused a slight dip in daytime temperatures at isolated locations across the state. On Wednesday, Sambalpur recorded the highest maximum temperature at 44.2 degrees Celsius, followed by Titilagarh at 43.5 degrees Celsius. The capital city Bhubaneswar experienced thunderstorm activity after its temperature reached 37.6 degrees Celsius.
IMD Forecast
The IMD has predicted that similar conditions—rain, thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds—will continue in several districts for the next five to six days. Manorama Mohanty, head of the regional IMD centre, stated that daytime temperatures are expected to drop by two to four degrees Celsius after two days. He added that a heatwave warning will remain in effect for some districts only on Thursday, while hot and humid conditions may persist in certain areas until May 31.
