Prayagraj: The Sangam city continued to experience extreme heatwave conditions on Monday as the mercury soared to 46.8 degrees Celsius, making it the second hottest location in Uttar Pradesh after Banda, which recorded 47.6 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in the city was 28.6 degrees Celsius, providing little relief even during the night.
The sharp rise in temperature became more alarming when compared to Sunday's maximum of 44.5 degrees Celsius, indicating a steep increase within 24 hours. The blazing sun and hot winds made it feel as if a giant blower was running across the roads, turning routine commuting into a punishing ordeal.
Impact on Daily Life
Streets wore a deserted look during the afternoon as people avoided stepping out unless absolutely necessary. With most schools already closed for summer vacations, children remained indoors, but office-goers, vendors, and daily commuters struggled in the oppressive heat. Two-wheeler riders were seen covering their faces with cotton cloth to shield themselves from the scorching heat. The sudden demand for cotton scarves and face covers has noticeably increased in local markets.
Community Initiatives
At major crossings, many social organizations and individuals have set up stalls providing free cold drinking water to passers-by. People were seen consuming cold drinks, bel sharbat, aam panna, and lemon water to stay hydrated.
Weather Forecast and Health Advisory
Weather experts have warned that there is no immediate respite from the prevailing heatwave conditions for the entire week. Doctors have urged residents to remain cautious to avoid heatstroke and dehydration. Dr. Jaiwardhan Rai advised parents to ensure children drink plenty of fluids. “Add a pinch of salt and sugar with a few drops of lemon in water bottles to prevent dehydration,” he suggested.
Low humidity, which was as low as 17 percent, has worsened discomfort, making the heatwave even more unbearable.
