Prayagraj: The Sangam city recorded a scorching 44.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday, compelling many residents to remain indoors. The streets witnessed sparse attendance, with people covering their faces with cotton cloths to protect themselves from the sun. According to weather experts, heatwave-like conditions are likely to persist over the next five days.
Health Experts Issue Caution
With the mercury rising steadily, health experts have cautioned about the risk of heat-related ailments and stressed the need for preventive measures. Doctors have advised that staying safe during peak summer requires preliminary measures such as adequate intake of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and avoiding venturing out between 12 noon and 4pm.
Expert Advice on Dehydration
Senior physician Dr. Anil Kumar stated, “Excessive sweating leads to significant loss of water, glucose, and essential salts, increasing the risk of dehydration. If not addressed promptly, this can lead to symptoms such as muscle cramps, dizziness, fatigue, and in severe cases, heatstroke and loss of consciousness.” He added that dehydration can adversely affect vital organs in some cases.
Importance of ORS
While consuming adequate water is crucial, doctors emphasize that water alone may not be sufficient under extreme heat conditions. ORS helps replenish lost electrolytes and maintain the body’s fluid balance more effectively.
