Residents of Jai Prakash Nagar in Patna are enduring severe inconvenience and health risks as the Rajiv Nagar drain continues to overflow, discharging contaminated water onto roads. The foul stench emanating from stagnant water has permeated the locality, making movement arduous for pedestrians and commuters alike.
Daily Life Disrupted
Schoolchildren are struggling to commute, while motorcyclists navigate cautiously through water-filled potholes. The situation deteriorated further on Tuesday evening when a portion of the road adjoining the drain collapsed, causing a JCB vehicle to fall into it. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the damaged drain and absence of safety barriers have raised serious safety concerns among locals.
Residents report that the overflowing drain has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and a vector for water-borne diseases. With the monsoon season approaching, they fear that contaminated water could enter their homes if the issue is not addressed promptly.
Government Response
The Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (Buidco) has deployed a de-watering vehicle and a team to remove accumulated water from the roads. Sweta Bhaskar, public relations officer of the corporation, stated that redevelopment of the drain is underway, with work largely conducted at night to minimize traffic disruption. She explained, “On Tuesday, a JCB vehicle fell into the drain due to the dilapidated condition of the drain and the attached road. Consequently, drain water has flooded the adjacent road. A dewatering machine has been deployed to remove accumulated water from the roads and mitigate inconvenience to residents.”
Officials have assured that the disruption caused by the incident will be resolved shortly and that the project remains on schedule.
Residents' Plea
However, residents have urged authorities to expedite repairs. One resident remarked, “It is extremely risky to drive through the road, especially at night. The drain water has made the road slippery, posing a danger to commuters.”
As the community awaits a lasting solution, the immediate focus remains on preventing further health hazards and ensuring safe passage for all.
