A Nipah virus-infected man in Kerala is in critical condition, with health authorities tracing 77 contacts, including family members and healthcare workers. The patient is currently receiving treatment at the Kozhikode medical college hospital, where a dedicated team of doctors is closely monitoring his condition.
Health Minister's Statement
Kerala Health Minister K Muraleedharan confirmed on Thursday that the patient's condition remains critical. He stated that all necessary medical measures are being taken to manage the case. The minister also assured that the health department is fully prepared to handle any potential spread of the virus.
Contact Tracing and Surveillance
As part of containment efforts, 77 contacts of the infected individual have been identified and are under surveillance. This includes 30 healthcare workers who were exposed to the patient. All contacts are being monitored for symptoms, and samples have been sent for testing. The health department has also set up a control room in Kozhikode to coordinate response activities.
Previous Outbreaks in Kerala
Kerala has experienced multiple Nipah outbreaks in the past, with the first reported in 2018 in Kozhikode district. Since then, the state has developed robust protocols for early detection, isolation, and contact tracing. The current case underscores the ongoing risk of zoonotic diseases in the region.
Public Health Advisory
Health authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and follow preventive measures, including avoiding contact with sick animals, particularly bats and pigs, which are known carriers of the Nipah virus. People are advised to seek immediate medical attention if they develop fever, headache, or respiratory symptoms. The minister emphasized that there is no need for panic, as the situation is under control.
