In a daring rescue operation, a police officer in Surat climbed into a locked flat on the seventh floor of a residential building to save a man who was attempting suicide. The incident, captured on video, has gone viral on social media, earning praise for the officer's bravery.
The Rescue Mission
The incident took place in the Adajan area of Surat, where a man in his 30s had locked himself inside his flat and was threatening to jump off the balcony. Neighbors alerted the police, who rushed to the spot. The man had barricaded the main door, making it impossible to enter through conventional means.
Sub-inspector Rakesh Kumar of the Surat Police arrived at the scene and assessed the situation. Without waiting for backup or specialized rescue equipment, he decided to climb from an adjacent balcony to reach the locked flat. The officer, showing remarkable agility and courage, scaled the building's exterior, holding onto window grilles and ledges, before successfully entering the flat through a window.
Inside the Flat
Once inside, Kumar found the man in a state of distress, sitting near the balcony edge. The officer calmly spoke to him, distracting him while moving closer. In a swift move, Kumar pulled the man away from the edge and secured him. The entire rescue operation took less than 10 minutes.
The man, identified as a local businessman, was reportedly under financial stress and had been suffering from depression. He was later handed over to his family and counseled by a psychologist.
Viral Video and Public Praise
A video of the rescue, captured by a neighbor on their mobile phone, shows Kumar climbing the building with no safety harness. The clip has been widely shared on WhatsApp, Twitter, and Facebook, with netizens hailing the officer as a hero.
Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh commended the officer's actions, stating, "This is a testament to the dedication and courage of our police force. We are proud of Sub-inspector Kumar."
Kumar, a 12-year veteran of the force, said he acted on instinct. "I didn't think about the height or the risk. My only goal was to save a life," he told reporters.
The rescue has sparked discussions about mental health awareness and the need for better support systems for those in distress. Local NGOs have offered free counseling services to the man and his family.
