Newborn's Tragic Death Sparks Crackdown on Unauthorised Hospitals in Muzaffarnagar
The tragic death of an 8-day-old newborn at an alleged unauthorised private hospital in Muzaffarnagar has ignited a major crackdown on illegal healthcare facilities, exposing a serious blame game between two key health departments. The incident, which occurred last Saturday, led to protests by the grieving family and prompted swift action from authorities.
Minister Uncovers Blame Game in Real-Time Confrontation
During a review meeting at the PWD guest house on Wednesday, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Kapil Dev Agarwal, who is also the incumbent MLA from Muzaffarnagar city, took direct charge of the situation. He first contacted the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) office to question lapses in action against illegal hospitals. When pressed on licensing irregularities and departmental inaction, health officials attempted to shift responsibility to the AYUSH department.
The minister then separately contacted the ayurvedic and unani officer for an explanation, only to find AYUSH officials placing the blame squarely back on the CMO office. With both departments engaging in a circular blame game, Agarwal escalated the matter by bringing the officers together on a joint conference call. This strategic move forced a real-time confrontation, leaving no room for deflection and starkly exposing the lack of coordination between the two departments.
Family Alleges Medical Negligence in Newborn's Death
The controversy stems from a heartbreaking incident where an 8-day-old newborn died during treatment at a private hospital in the district. According to family members, doctors initially advised keeping the infant on a machine for several days despite the child being stable. Late at night, the hospital informed the family that the baby's condition had suddenly deteriorated and referred the infant to a facility in Meerut.
Tragically, the newborn died shortly after reaching the referred hospital. The family has alleged clear medical negligence, staging protests at the facility while hospital staff and doctors reportedly fled the premises. Following the incident, a team from the district health department conducted a preliminary inquiry and sealed the hospital.
Minister Issues Stern Warning and Directs Immediate Action
Expressing strong displeasure at the departmental blame game, Minister Agarwal termed the situation a "serious failure of accountability" and warned that such negligence would not be tolerated under any circumstances. He directed officials from both the health and AYUSH departments to immediately initiate comprehensive field inspections and take strict, decisive action against all illegal hospitals operating without proper authorization.
"I have spoken with the CMO and ayurvedic and unani officer on conference call as they're making different statements," Agarwal stated. "I have instructed them to take action against such hospitals that are being operated without proper papers."
Medical Associations Extend Support Amid Growing Concerns
The incident has drawn attention from major medical bodies, with both the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) extending their support to address the systemic issues highlighted by this tragedy. The case underscores broader concerns about regulatory oversight in healthcare, particularly regarding unauthorized medical facilities that may compromise patient safety.
As investigations continue, the minister's intervention has brought renewed focus on improving inter-departmental coordination and ensuring stricter enforcement of healthcare regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
