Middle East Conflict Sparks Healthcare Supply Chain Crisis and Surging Medical Costs

The ongoing geopolitical tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran are now casting a long shadow over the global healthcare sector, with significant repercussions being felt in markets like Prayagraj. While a severe shortage of surgical equipment has not yet materialized, the industry is grappling under immense pressure due to skyrocketing costs and widespread supply chain disruptions.

Raw Material Prices Skyrocket Amidst Trade Route Chaos

Pharmaceutical companies are bracing for a sharp increase in raw material prices, particularly for medical-grade polypropylene—a crucial type of plastic used in manufacturing syringes. Industry traders anticipate that the prices of medicines and surgical equipment could surge by 20% to 25% starting next month.

Anil Dubey, President of the Allahabad Chemist & Druggist Association, explained to TOI that India's medical devices and pharmaceutical sectors heavily rely on imports of raw materials, ingredients, and specialized components from Gulf countries. Critical trade routes are now facing severe delays, coupled with higher freight charges and energy volatility, which have collectively inflated the cost base for healthcare companies.

"Since the conflict outbreak in February, the price of plastic required for medical and surgical equipment has already surged by 50% to 60%," Dubey stated. "Additionally, petrochemical plants have curtailed production due to gas shortages, leading to an increase of up to Rs 24,000 per metric tonne in raw material costs in March alone."

Energy Shortages and Manufacturing Challenges

Syringe manufacturing, an energy-intensive process, is particularly hard-hit. Gas rationing has forced suppliers to cut industrial gas supplies by 40% to 60%. Consequently, pharmaceutical companies and factories are now compelled to rely on expensive diesel or purchase gas at inflated rates to sustain operations, severely eroding their profit margins.

Manufacturers of essential items such as syringes, gloves, catheters, and other consumables have already implemented price hikes ranging from Rs 3 to Rs 10 per unit.

Wider Impact on Medical Devices and Logistics

Nikhil Malang, Organising Secretary of the Prayag Chemist and Druggist Association (Retail), highlighted that prices for a broader range of medical products are also set to rise. Nebulisers, BP machines, surgical tapes, glucometers, vaporisers, and other surgical products are expected to increase by 10% to 20% from April.

This anticipated price surge is attributed to a severe shortage of logistics and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint. "Sea freight rates have escalated significantly, causing delays in the import of raw materials," Malang noted. "The operational capacity of major airports in the Gulf region has plummeted by up to 80%, resulting in delays of several weeks for the movement of critical components."

Local Market Realities and Future Projections

Traders at the Leader Road market in Prayagraj reported that several Indian manufacturers, particularly those in hubs like Faridabad, have already increased syringe prices by 10% to 25%. There is growing concern that if the Middle East conflict persists for another three to six months, hospitals could face a severe shortage of syringes, exacerbating the healthcare crisis.

The confluence of rising raw material costs, energy shortages, and logistical bottlenecks underscores the vulnerability of global healthcare supply chains to geopolitical instability. Stakeholders across the sector are urging for strategic interventions to mitigate these impacts and ensure the continued availability of essential medical supplies.
