Medical Experts in Lucknow Sound Alarm Over Increasing Abdominal Tuberculosis Cases

Doctors in Lucknow have issued a critical warning about a noticeable rise in cases of abdominal tuberculosis, urging the public to be vigilant about specific symptoms that could indicate this serious condition. The caution was raised during the 114th Foundation Day programme of the Department of General Surgery at King George's Medical University on Tuesday.

Identifying the Symptoms of Abdominal Tuberculosis

According to medical professionals, abdominal tuberculosis affects the intestines, abdominal lining, and lymph nodes. Key symptoms to watch for include:

  • Persistent abdominal pain that does not subside
  • Unexplained and rapid weight loss
  • Loss of appetite and general weakness
  • Mild fever and abdominal swelling or distension
  • Vomiting and diarrhoea in some cases

Dr G Yadav, Head of the Department of Surgery at GSVM Medical College in Kanpur, emphasized that these symptoms are often mistaken for routine indigestion or gastric issues, leading to dangerous delays in diagnosis. "Patients with abdominal TB frequently report these signs, but they are commonly overlooked as minor digestive problems," he stated.

Importance of Early Diagnosis and Treatment

Experts at the event stressed that early detection and completion of treatment are crucial to prevent complications and improve patient outcomes. Abdominal tuberculosis can spread through the air, with risk factors including low immunity, malnutrition, and contact with infected individuals.

Dr Yadav highlighted preventive measures such as maintaining good nutrition, practicing hygiene, and taking respiratory precautions. He also underscored the protective role of the BCG vaccination and issued a stern warning against discontinuing anti-tubercular therapy midway, which can lead to severe health consequences.

Academic Sessions and Broader Medical Discussions

The foundation day programme saw participation from around 140 doctors and students from various medical institutions. Academic sessions covered a wide range of surgical subjects, reflecting the comprehensive nature of modern medical education.

Notable presentations included:

  1. Prof Brajesh Mishra and Prof Harshvardhan from the Department of Plastic Surgery discussing advanced burn injury management techniques.
  2. Prof Sandeep Tiwari, Head of Trauma Surgery, along with former professor Vinod Jain, delivering an insightful session on the management of chest and abdominal trauma.
  3. Prof Shailendra Yadav speaking on complex neck surgeries, while Dr Suresh Kumar addressed thoracic diseases and their effective management strategies.

The event was attended by several prominent medical figures, including Prof Akshay Anand, Prof Ravi Kumar, Dr Bhupendra, Prof J D Rawat, Dr Archika, Dr Rajesh Gupta, Dr Basant Kumar, Dr Ambrish Kumar, and Dr Pankaj Kumar, highlighting the collaborative effort in addressing public health concerns.

This gathering served as a platform to not only discuss abdominal tuberculosis but also to advance surgical knowledge across multiple disciplines, reinforcing the medical community's commitment to improving healthcare outcomes through education and early intervention.
