The Kanpur police in Uttar Pradesh have initiated an inquiry into a tragic incident where a newborn girl died after a sudden fire erupted in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of a private nursing home. The infant, born just hours earlier at the same facility in the Brahm Nagar area, succumbed to severe burns, prompting allegations of negligence from her family.
Family Protests and Allegations of Concealment
Following the incident, the victim's family staged a protest at the hospital, accusing the management and staff of gross negligence. They claimed that the hospital attempted to hide the death for an extended period, only disclosing it after repeated demands from the family. Ashok Kumar, Station House Officer of the Bithoor police station, stated that an inquiry is currently underway, but no formal case has been registered yet. He added that police are gathering details from hospital personnel and have sent the baby's body for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

According to police reports, Arund Nishad, a resident of Ramesh Nagar, brought his wife Shalu to the hospital late Sunday evening after she experienced labour pains. Shalu delivered a baby girl later that evening, and the newborn was subsequently admitted to the NICU for necessary medical care.
The family alleges that the infant was placed on a bed under a warmer machine in the NICU when it suddenly caught fire. They assert that the newborn suffered severe burns and died on the spot, highlighting potential safety lapses in the hospital's equipment and protocols.

The situation escalated during the family's protest but was eventually brought under control after police arrived at the scene. Authorities assured the family of a thorough investigation and promised appropriate action based on the findings. The police are now focused on:
