Fire Erupts in Surgical ICU at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital
A significant fire incident occurred on Tuesday morning within the surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) located in the multi-specialty block of the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) in Thiruvananthapuram. The blaze, which ignited around 9:30 AM, caused considerable panic among patients, their attendants, and visitors present at the facility. Fortunately, hospital authorities have confirmed that there were no casualties resulting from this alarming event.
Cause and Immediate Response to the ICU Blaze
The fire is suspected to have originated from a portable ventilator that likely developed a short circuit, producing a spark that ignited within the ICU. This led to thick smoke rapidly billowing out of the ward, engulfing sections of the hospital block. In a critical and timely maneuver, the hospital staff immediately shut off the oxygen supply to the ICU. This decisive action was pivotal in preventing the flames from spreading further and potentially causing a more severe disaster.
Medical personnel, alongside security staff and bystanders, acted swiftly to evacuate patients not only from the surgical ICU but also from the adjacent trauma ICU. Reports indicate that approximately 36 patients were successfully relocated to alternative facilities within the hospital. Fire and rescue teams from the Chenkalchoola and Chackai fire stations arrived at the scene within minutes and efficiently brought the fire under control.

While no fatalities were reported, a few hospital staff members experienced mild discomfort due to smoke inhalation. Officials have emphasized that the situation was managed effectively. Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V V Rajesh, who visited the hospital shortly after the incident, praised the coordinated efforts. "The fire was brought under control in time, and all patients are safe. The quick coordination between hospital staff and the fire force helped avert a major tragedy," he stated. Mayor Rajesh added that all critical equipment in the ICU would undergo a thorough inspection.
Dr. C G Jayachandran, the medical college superintendent, provided further details: "The fire originated from a portable ventilator following a suspected short circuit. The oxygen supply was immediately stopped, and patients were shifted without delay. There is no danger now, and services are being restored." Regional fire officer Abdul Rasheed K highlighted that the incident could have escalated into a serious catastrophe without such prompt intervention.
Ministerial Praise and Future Preventive Measures
In an official statement, Kerala Health Minister Veena George commended the coordinated efforts of doctors and hospital staff, which ensured no untoward incidents occurred. Acting on the minister's instructions, Additional Chief Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) Rajan Khobragade and the minister's private secretary promptly reached the hospital site. The minister confirmed that all patients were safely relocated within 30 minutes with full safety precautions in place.
Following the incident, the Government Medical College Hospital resumed normal operations. However, authorities have mandated a detailed inspection of electrical systems and life-support equipment across all critical care units. This proactive measure aims to prevent similar fire incidents in the future, ensuring enhanced safety protocols for patients and staff.
