Hamidia Hospital Parking Operator Illegally Triples Fees, Sparking Outrage

In a shocking incident at Bhopal's Hamidia Hospital, visitors and patients' attendants were allegedly forced to pay three times the approved parking fees for two-wheelers and four-wheelers. The parking operator unilaterally hiked the rates, leading to widespread anger and confusion among those relying on the facility.

Unauthorized Rate Hike and False Claims

The government-run hospital has fixed parking charges at Rs 10 for two-wheelers and Rs 20 for four-wheelers. However, on April 1, the operator began demanding Rs 30 for two-wheelers and Rs 60 for four-wheelers. He printed new tickets reflecting these inflated rates and claimed the revised fares had been officially approved and were effective from that date.

Medical Superintendent Dr. Suneet Tandon firmly denied any such approval. "No new fare has been approved. The operator has acted on his own," Dr. Tandon stated. He confirmed that the hospital has issued a notice to the operator and indicated that penalties would be imposed for this unauthorized action.

Widespread Impact on Patients and Attendants

Hamidia Hospital experiences heavy daily footfall, with approximately 2,500 patients visiting the Outpatient Department (OPD) and around 1,000 admitted in the Inpatient Department (IPD). Nearly all attendants depend on the hospital's parking facility, making this overcharging issue affect hundreds of people.

Visitors reported that on April 1, many were compelled to pay the inflated charges, believing the hike was legitimate. Farhan, one of the affected attendants, shared, "We were told the new rates were official, but later learned they were not." He paid Rs 30 for his two-wheeler, only to discover the operator had deceived him.

Hospital's Response and Future Actions

The hospital administration has taken swift action by issuing a formal notice to the parking operator. Dr. Tandon emphasized that the operator's claims of approval were entirely false and that the hospital is committed to protecting patients and visitors from such exploitation.

This incident highlights the need for stricter monitoring of third-party services at public healthcare facilities. Authorities are urged to implement better oversight to prevent similar occurrences in the future, ensuring that vulnerable individuals are not subjected to unauthorized financial burdens during medical visits.
