In Shillong, the Centre on Sunday expressed satisfaction over the Meghalaya government's progress in providing comprehensive support to persons with disabilities (PwDs). Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Virendra Kumar, who is on a three-day tour to the state, highlighted the advancements during his visit to key facilities.

Focus on Rehabilitation and Empowerment

The minister visited the Composite Regional Centre (CRC) for skill development, rehabilitation, and empowerment of persons with disabilities. He emphasized that CRCs across the country, along with national institutes under the Department of Empowerment of PwDs, have been working extensively to provide rehabilitation, vocational training, and therapeutic interventions to 'divyangjans'.

Key areas of progress noted include:

  • Therapeutic services for physical and mental well-being
  • Skill development training programs for employment readiness
  • Distribution of assistive devices to enhance mobility and independence
  • Educational support initiatives for academic advancement

Commitment to Inclusive Development

Reiterating the Centre's commitment to inclusive development, Minister Virendra Kumar emphasized that empowerment of persons with disabilities remains a key priority under the 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas' initiative. He stated that the government's approach focuses on creating an enabling environment where every individual can participate fully in society.

The minister's visit underscores the ongoing efforts to bridge gaps in disability support services across different regions of the country.

This assessment comes as part of the Union minister's broader evaluation of social welfare programs in the northeastern state. The positive feedback reflects the collaborative work between central and state authorities in addressing the needs of persons with disabilities through structured interventions and policy implementation.
