The health department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) conducted a comprehensive food safety drive between May 19 and May 30, collecting 290 food samples from various food units across the city. Of these, six samples were declared substandard after laboratory testing.
Pani Puri Samples and Seizures
During the drive, a total of 86 pani puri samples were collected from different areas. Seven of these samples were found to contain prohibited food colour, leading to the immediate seizure of the offending stalls.
Inspections and Notices
The health department inspected 599 food units across Ahmedabad. As a result of violations observed, notices were issued to 202 units for non-compliance with food safety regulations.
In a significant enforcement action, authorities destroyed 592 kilograms of inedible food and 511 litres of non-potable liquids to prevent their consumption.
Spice Samples and Analog Paneer
Among the 290 food samples collected, 65 were spices. All samples were sent to a public laboratory for analysis, and eventually six were deemed substandard. Additionally, over the past three months, 27 food samples of 'analog paneer' were declared substandard, highlighting ongoing quality concerns.
Closure of Unhygienic Cafe
Due to unhygienic conditions, a cafe in Bodakdev was sealed by the health department as part of the drive.
Throughout the month of May, the AMC health department collected 862 food samples in total. Of these, six were declared unsafe and 21 were deemed substandard, underscoring the corporation's commitment to food safety.
